EXPERT INSIGHTS

WCAG AA vs AAA Compliance

WCAG AA is the legal standard in most jurisdictions. AAA is aspirational - some criteria cannot be met for all content types.

Go With WCAG 2.1 AA

  • Legal compliance baseline

Required by ADA, Section 508, EN 301 549 (EU), and AODA - protects against litigation.

  • Achievable for all content

Every AA criterion can realistically be met for any type of web content.

  • Broad user impact

26% of US adults have a disability - AA compliance opens your product to all of them.

  • SEO correlation

Semantic HTML, alt text, and keyboard navigation also improve search rankings.

Go With WCAG 2.1 AAA

  • Maximum inclusivity

Higher contrast ratios and enhanced captions serve users with severe impairments.

  • Government and education

Some public sector contracts require AAA for specific content types.

  • Brand leadership

Demonstrates deep commitment to inclusivity beyond legal minimums.

  • Future-proofing

WCAG 3.0 may incorporate current AAA criteria as baseline.

EXPERT GUIDANCE

Automated vs Manual Accessibility Testing

Automated (axe-core / Lighthouse)

Coverage

Catches ~30-40% of WCAG issues automatically - fast baseline.

Speed

Runs in CI pipeline - every PR checked in seconds.

False Positives

Occasional false positives - requires human verification.

Cost

Free (axe browser extension) to $300/month (Deque axe DevTools Pro).

Ongoing Monitoring

Automated - every deploy triggers accessibility scan.

Best For

Development phase - catch issues before they ship.

Manual + Screen Reader Testing

Coverage

Catches 100% of issues - required for legal defensibility.

Speed

1-3 days for full screen reader audit (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver).

False Positives

Expert judgment - minimal false positives with experienced auditor.

Cost

Kultrix rate card: $35/hour build, $20/hour QA and project management. A third-party VPAT is quoted per audit, by page count.

Ongoing Monitoring

Manual - quarterly or release-based audits.

Best For

Pre-launch compliance verification, legal certification, procurement.

Figures above are indicative ranges, not a quote. Anything marked as a vendor list price is that vendor's own published price, not ours. Our own work is billed at $35/hour for design and development, $20/hour for QA and $20/hour for project management, a blended $30.5/hour, the same numbers behind the cost calculator. What a project costs on top of that depends on scope, integrations and compliance.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A WCAG accessibility audit is a structured evaluation of your website or application against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines - the international standard for digital accessibility. It identifies barriers that prevent people with disabilities from using your product, documents each issue against the relevant criterion, and provides concrete guidance for remediation.

We audit to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which is the baseline required by most legal frameworks including ADA (US), AODA (Canada), and EAA (EU). We can also assess Level AAA criteria on request for organizations with the highest accessibility requirements, such as government or healthcare.

Automated tools like axe-core reliably detect only 30-40% of WCAG failures. Issues like illogical focus order, misleading button labels, overly complex ARIA patterns, and cognitive load problems require human judgment and real assistive technology to find. Our audits combine both for comprehensive coverage.

It depends on how many distinct templates and interactive components there are, not on how many pages: twenty pages built from six templates is a smaller job than six pages with six bespoke widgets. We scope every audit before it starts, so you get a fixed date and a fixed price rather than a range from a web page. Bringing a product up to WCAG afterwards is a separate module in our estimate at 60-130 hours, and you can price it against the rest of your scope at kultrix.com/cost-calculator.

We do both. The audit deliverable is a detailed report with code-level fix recommendations. We also offer a follow-on remediation engagement where our engineers implement the fixes, re-test, and verify resolution. Many clients bundle audit and remediation for a single end-to-end engagement.

A VPAT (Voluntary Product Accessibility Template) is a standardized document that describes how your product conforms to accessibility standards. It is commonly required for government procurement, enterprise software sales, and EU market compliance. We draft VPATs as part of our audit deliverables.

Minor changes are typically required - color contrast adjustments, clearer link text, and visible focus indicators. We document design changes in Figma alongside the code recommendations so your design team can update the design system before engineering implements fixes. The visual impact is usually minimal.

In the US, the ADA has been applied to websites through court decisions, resulting in thousands of lawsuits per year. The EU Accessibility Act mandates compliance for commercial digital products by 2025. Beyond legal risk, inaccessible products systematically exclude a significant portion of your potential user base.

For clients who want the highest-confidence audit, we can arrange moderated usability sessions with participants who use screen readers, switch controls, or other assistive technology. This goes beyond criterion compliance and surfaces real-world usability barriers that technical audits alone cannot detect.

We recommend an initial comprehensive audit followed by ongoing monitoring. Any significant feature release or redesign should be accompanied by an accessibility review before shipping. For fast-moving products, we offer a quarterly retainer that integrates accessibility checks into your sprint cadence.

Yes. We offer team workshops covering semantic HTML, ARIA best practices, keyboard interaction patterns, and how to interpret screen reader output. Trained developers catch accessibility issues during development rather than after launch, dramatically reducing remediation cost.

We classify issues as Critical (blocks all assistive technology users from completing a task), Serious (significantly impairs the experience), Moderate (creates confusion or extra effort), and Minor (cosmetic or edge-case). Critical issues in core user flows - login, checkout, form submission - are always addressed first.
