AI UX design is the discipline of creating user experiences for products where artificial intelligence drives some or all of the output. It differs from conventional UX because the system's behaviour is probabilistic rather than deterministic — the same input may produce different outputs, the system can be wrong, and users must develop new mental models for what the product can and cannot do reliably. AI UX designers must understand both user psychology and the practical behaviour of AI systems.

Figma is the primary tool for wireframing, component design, and prototyping. For high-fidelity interactive AI prototypes, we use Framer, which can integrate with real API calls to simulate actual AI behaviour in usability tests. We also use ProtoPie for complex interaction prototyping and Maze or UserTesting for remote usability research.

Designing for uncertainty is one of the defining challenges of AI UX. We use confidence indicators to communicate when the model is unsure, provide explanation surfaces that let users understand why a recommendation was made, design correction flows that allow users to improve outputs without frustration, and create fallback experiences for cases where the model fails entirely. We test these edge cases explicitly in usability research rather than treating them as hypothetical.

Conversational interface design requires a different process than visual UI design. Yes. We have designed multiple LLM-powered chat interfaces. The design work includes the chat surface itself, streaming text rendering, citation and source attribution patterns, session management and history, model selector UX, prompt suggestion surfaces, feedback mechanisms (thumbs up/down, detailed feedback), and the system prompt or persona configuration UI for admin users. Each of these patterns has well-established usability research behind it that we apply.

AI products present unique user research challenges because participants often do not have prior mental models to draw on. We use think-aloud usability testing to understand how users interpret AI outputs, diary studies to observe how trust in the AI changes over time with repeated use, and concept testing for AI features before they are built. We pay particular attention to AI-specific failure modes: over-trust, under-trust, and misunderstanding of the system's capabilities.

AI product onboarding must accomplish two things simultaneously: teach users what the product can do, and calibrate expectations so they are not disappointed by what it cannot do. We design progressive disclosure onboarding flows that demonstrate the product's strongest capabilities first, introduce limitations gradually and framed constructively, and guide users towards the interactions and prompting patterns that produce the best results. We test onboarding with new users before launch.
